Canadian live-in Caregiver Program
The Live-in Caregiver Program is the perfect way for experienced nannies and caregivers to find employment in Canada. On this program nannies/caregivers need to be qualified to care independently for children, seniors, or people who have disabilities. After completing at least 2 years of work in Canada under the Live-in Caregiver Program, you can apply for Permanent Residence in Canada. In order to qualify for this program you need to meet the following 3 requirements:
- Successful completion of the equivalent of a Canadian high school education. In some countries this may mean you need to have at least 2 years of post secondary education. If you are from the Philippines you will need at least 72 units. This requirement ensures that applicants who apply for permanent residence after two years will be able to succeed in the general labour market.
- Six months of full-time training or 12 months of experience paid employment. This employment has to be in a field or occupation related to the job you are seeking as a live-in caregiver. You may have gained your training or experience in early childhood education, geriatric care, paediatric nursing or first aid, to name a few, OR you may have completed your training as part of your formal education. To meet the criteria for experience you must have completed one year of full-time paid employment, including at least six months of continuous employment with one employer, in that field or occupation. This experience must have been obtained within the three years immediately prior to the day on which you submit you application for a work permit to the visa processing office.
- Ability to speak read and understand either English or French. You must be able to function independently in a home setting. This requirement is important to both you and the family. It will enable you to read and understand what your rights and obligations are. For the family it gives them peace of mind that you are able to communicate during an emergency situation and that you have the ability to read and understand instructions and routines.
Other documents which may be required for your work permit application are:
- Valid passport
- Original birth certificate
- Validated and authenticated educational certificates and transcripts for high school and college/university
- Police clearance from every country where you have lived or worked
